Dusky are London based musicians Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman. As comfortable writing elegant orchestral pieces or stirring piano motifs as they are jackin' house and epic techno grooves, Dusky's diverse sounds are united by the duo's singular aim – to compose electronic music with depth, soul and originality. Influenced by everything from classical and jazz to avant-garde electronica, the duo's emphasis on musical depth rather than genre restrictions has seen their compositions played by DJs as diverse as Pete Tong, Vincenzo, Zane Lowe, MJ Cole, Dubfire, Sasha and Laurent Garnier. Also existing as progressive/melodic house entity Solarity, they conceived their Dusky moniker as an outlet for their more organic, wide-ranging sounds – a deeply musical expansion of their nocturnal inspirations. Always intelligent, effortlessly intricate and often emotive, Dusky's sound glides across genres easily. With their debut single 'Lost In You' (feat. vocalist Janai) offering a soul-drenched summer house anthem, the duo's debut album 'Stick By This' was described as "an intoxicating album full of flashes of brilliance and innovation" by DJMag. With the album touching on ambient, dub, electronica and their organic take on house and techno, Dusky have quickly marked themselves out as producers with a uniquely broad appeal. As dance legend Pete Tong bigs them up on BBC Radio 1 and DJs like T. Williams and DMZ's Loefah hammer their tracks on urban phenomenon Rinse FM, the future is looking bright for Dusky.
Tom Trago's relationship with music is particularly intense. "I couldn't imagine life without music," he says. "I feel this physical need to make music every day. It's like my body needs it as much as it needs food, water or sunshine."
Right now, Trago's immersion in music is almost total. An internationally renowned DJ, producer, live performer and label owner with three critically acclaimed albums to his name, the Dutchman divides his time between all-day studio sessions, DJ gigs and live shows all over the world, and a steady stream of musical collaborations with friends from Amsterdam and beyond. You sometimes wonder how he finds any time for sleep.
His dedication to the cause has been unflinching since his earliest years. He grew up in a free-spirited, artistic household, surrounded by music and encouraged to make his own. Due to suffering from juvenile chronic arthritis, he couldn't get out of the house much, so entertained himself by recording his own home-made radio shows using the weird and wonderful albums he found in his parents' record collection.
Fast forward to 2013, and Tom is a man in demand. Aside from preparing for an extended live tour in support of his new album The Light Fantastic, he continues to run his Voyage Direct label and parties (a showcase for Dutch house music, named after his 2009 debut album) and still pours his heart and soul into making new tracks. He excitedly talks about ideas for musical projects – from film soundtracks to audiovisual performances and straight-up club tracks – while preparing for DJ sets in Ibiza, London or New York.
His immersion in music may be total, but Tom Trago's musical journey is far from complete. In fact, it's only just begun.
whiteowljaguar plugs in to transport the human into alternate space and ancient, carnal “deep time.” The duo’s sounds and environments shake away the extraneous, revealing the raw.
Assembled in 2012, Tyler Vigil and Rebecca-Emma Kaplan (Dollpartz) blended sounds to produce whiteowljaguar and Talon&Claw Productions, an initiative to expel the mundane through virile vibrations and inspired genuine presence.
Vigil, whose ten years of DJing has dipped his hands and ears in genres from breaks to minimal and beyond, uses his architectural mind to build sound that molds space and towers over: sound to behold. A lifelong relationship with percussion lays his framework; his designed roar brings chambers of depth to the whiteowljaguar sound and Talon&Claw vision.
The newer ear of Dollpartz brings the electro-pop-culture influence of her time and the bows, lollipops, and balloons of her heart. With a taste for girlie vocals and deep, dirty, hooting night owl bass, she blends the light and dark to aim at the authentic.
The Talon&Claw production instigates mobility- a dig deep inside and a great reach outward, an active celebration of truth and joy. It is a mission to bring the best new, underground electronic music to New York City.
